How to Make a Bed
From an anti top sheet household
Gone are the days of crisp white bedding (I hope) (unless you have a hotel, then maybe it’s okay). I want color, pattern and texture. And fun. Bedrooms should be fun.
This is my formula for making a bed that brings you joy.
1. Foundation first
Fitted sheet tight, flat sheet optional. A tucked- in flat sheet makes me feel like I’m being squished, but you do you.
2. Comforter or Quilt
I personally prefer a big giant fluffy comforter because it’s cozy, but I also sleep with the windows open because I get hot. If a comforter makes you feel like you’re sleeping in the Sahara during peak daylight, do a quilt. Quilts remind me of cabins in the best way and they are perfect for hot sleepers. I have been eyeing THIS ONE from Lulu & Georgia forever. I think she’s perfect.
3. Fold down for texture at the top
Fold the comforter down just enough so the pillows sit directly on the mattress. That little fold creates visual texture at the top of the bed that ties in with your pillows. Without it a bed feels boring imo.
4. Pillow math (keep it simple)
My go-to: two sets of sleeping pillows stacked in pairs, then one giant bolster in front. That’s it. you could also do sleeping pillows in the back, euro shams in the front, and then a small or large bolster. I think bolsters are incredibly chic. Never do more than three layers, that’s aggressive.
5. Balance texture, pattern, and solids
A styled bed is about balance. Mix a crisp cotton sheet with a linen quilt, bring in a patterned throw pillow or two (floral, stripe, etc), then ground it with solids. Too many patterns feels loud, too many solids feels flat.
6. Throw blanket = finishing touch
Folded over the bottom third or draped casually at the corner, a throw gives that “I live here but I care” vibe.
BAM! Formula done. Take this advice or don’t, but do what brings you joy.
